Badagry is famous for many firsts: it has the 1st storey-building in Nigeria, the 1st primary school, the 1st well, the 1st safe, it was where Christianity was 1st preached in Nigeria, it is the 1st urbanised town on the coast of West Africa. Sitting along the Atlantic coast of Lagos, Badagry boasts of several other sites like Black Heritage Museum, Brazillian Barracoon (slave cells), slave market, Mobee Family Slave Relics Museum, early missionary cemetary, and too many others.
Slave trade earned Badagry its fame. As far back as 1442, merchants sailed from Brazil and Portugal to buy humans at Badagry’s slave port before it was abolished in 1886.
